U.S. Veteran

West Carthage - Carl A. Brown, 91, formerly of 40 Madison St., died early Saturday morning, October 6, 2012, in the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility where he has resided since February 28, 2012.

Carl was born in Potsdam on December 1, 1920, the son of the late John and Mabel Monette Brown. He attended school in Piercefield. He served in the Army from December of 1942 until December of 1945. He received the purple heart. He married the former Delores M. McCallops on July 24, 1948 at St. Paul’s Church in Black River. She died on January 20, 2008. Carl served in the CCC’s and worked at the St. Regis Paper Mill in Herrings. They moved to the Herkimer area and Carl worked for the Herkimer Housing Authority for over 30 years. He retired in 1982. They returned to the Carthage area in 1989. He was a former member of the American Legion.

He is survived by one sister: Pearl Gaines of Carthage, a brother and his wife: Earl and Hilda Brown of Port Leyden and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with military honors will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Felts Mills Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
