James Patrick Mastin

U.S. Veteran

Croghan - James P. Mastin, 68, of 6570 Baker Road, died Saturday morning, November 17, 2012, at his residence where he was under the care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.

Mr. Mastin was born in Carthage on June 23, 1944, the son of the late Alton and Catherine Champion Mastin. He attended Carthage Schools. He served in the Navy from October of 1961 to May of 1963 and later with the Naval Reserves for 6 years. He married the former Tamara S. Earle on December 31, 1961 in Great Bend. He worked at the former St. Regis Paper Mill in Deferiet for 10 years, Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown and for 26 years at Fort Drum as a heating and air conditioning technician, retiring in 2006. Jim was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. His favorite time was spending it with his wife of 50 years and with his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Mastin was a life member of the American Legion Post # 789, Carthage, life member of the VFW Post # 7227, Carthage and former member of the BPOE Lodge # 1762, Carthage. He is survived by his wife Tamara S. of Croghan, two daughters: Debra Spencer of Columbus, OH and Tara Mastin of Carthage, four sons: James of Santa Maria, CA, Michael of Columbus, OH, Jeffery of Brewerton and Marcus of Black River, 9 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren, a brother: William Mastin of Carthage, a sister, Mary Chrisjohn of Syracuse and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by 2 brothers, Fred and Robert Mastin and a grandson.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. James Church with the Rev. George F. Maroun and Rev. Daniel Chapin officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Monday from 4-7pm. Members of the American Legion will conduct a memorial service at 6:00pm followed by the VFW at 6:30pm.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.
