Carthage - Bertha D. Barre, 89, died Tuesday evening, January 8, 2013, in the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Carthage Area Hospital where she has resided since August of 2008.

Bertha was born in Montreal, Canada on October 6, 1923, the daughter of the late Michael and Anna Rodzona Vynychenko. She attended school in Montreal. She married Robert F. Barre on January 18, 1946 at the Centenary United Church in Montreal. Together with her husband, the couple operated a farm in the Antwerp area for many years. Mr. Barre, a former veteran of World War II, died in 2002. Bertha worked as a clerk for the former J.J. Newberry’s Store in Gouverneur for several years.

She is survived by three daughters: Maureen S. Barre of Carthage, Sandra Barre of Monmouth Beach, NJ and Camelia Bratkovic of Desert Hot Springs, CA, three sons: Patrick Barre of Manteca, CA, Brian Barre of Watertown and Robert Maitland of Canton, one sister: Olga Richard of Montreal, Canada, one brother, John Vynychenko of Montreal, Canada, 14 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a brother, Edward and her sister, Mary.

Family and friends may call at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home on Friday, January 11th from 11.00am - 1:00pm. Spring burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Montreal, Canada.
