Obituary

Abigail Louisa Hammond, 53, of Carthage, NY was stricken suddenly at her residence on Wednesday evening and passed away early Thursday morning, October 19, 2023.

Abigail was born on May 23,1970 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Grant and Patricia (Bollman) Deffibaugh. Abigail attended Claysburgh-Kimmel High School in Bedford, Pennsylvania where she graduated class of 1988. She received her AAS degree from Penn State University in 1990 and earned her bachelor's degree from Columbia in 2013. She was united in marriage to SSG (Retired) Thomas R. Hammond on May 25,1991 in Altoona, PA who passed away on July 16, 2020. She was an active volunteer, lending her time, energy, and money to help army families and their soldiers adjust upon moving to Fort Drum, and during or after deployments, as well as with such organizations as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and the book conference Readers Take Denver. Abbie was employed at the Social Security Office in Watertown for several years where she was a claims specialist.

Abigail enjoyed reading, and challenged herself to read a certain number of books every year. She always met this challenge very early in the year and often had to increase the challenge by the month. She was a skilled writer and was published once in Chicken Soup for the Military Wives' Soul. She hoped to be published with them in another volume, but unfortunately was not able to accomplish this before she passed. She also enjoyed crafting, including making various crafts with her Cricut, cross-stitching and sewing. She was an amazing photographer, and had an eye for capturing the perfect photo.

She is survived by her children, Dianna and her husband and Ján Dzurov of Bratislava, Slovakia, William Hammond and his partner, Emily Newman of Philadelphia, PA, Jessi Hammond and her husband, Michael Sanders II of Syracuse, NY Jacob Hammond and his fiancé, Elizabeth Hammond of Fort Collins, CO, and her two dogs, Skoll and Hati. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas Hammond, and her parents Grant and Patricia (Bollman) Deffibaugh

Abigail will be remembered as she lived; with a fierce love from her children and all the people she touched that matches her love for them. A passionate woman, whose flame was taken too soon.
