Bernard (Bernie) S. Boulio, 89, Resident of the FASNY Firemen's Home, Hudson, NY since March, former long time West Carthage resident, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2015.
Bernard was born in Watertown on March 27, 1926, the son of the late Francis T. and Mary Smith Boulio. He graduated from West Carthage High School in 1944. He married Rosemary Keck on October 26, 1946 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Copenhagen.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1944 to 1946 and in the NYS Army National Guard from 1954 to 1987, retiring as a Chief warrant Officer 0-4. He was employed as a maintenance technician/supervisor at NYS Army National Guard Equipment Concentration Site, Fort Drum, retiring in 1981 after more than 27 years of service.
Bernard was very involved in community service for the Village of West Carthage where he; served on the police force from 1951 – 1962, police chief from 1962-1967, village trustee from 1967-1977 and Mayor from 1981-1983. While serving as a village trustee, he was most proud of being a founding member of the West Carthage Housing Authority and served on its board from 1978-1981 which was responsible for obtaining funding to build West Side Terrace, where he would later reside.
In addition, Bernie was known state-wide for his dedication to volunteer fireman service starting with the West Carthage Fire Department where he was a past chief, charter member of the Hornets Drill Team and life member of the Benevolent Association. His fire service beyond West Carthage included; Lifetime member of NNY Fireman's Assoc. where he was secretary from 1960-1968, Charter and Lifetime member of NNY Drill Teams Assoc., member NYS Assoc. of Fire Chiefs and president of the Fireman's Association of New York (FASNY) from 1970-1972. As FASNY past president he continued to serve as their financial secretary from 1975-1983 and a trustee at the Fireman's Home, Hudson, NY. Throughout his life Bernie deeply enjoyed his time devoted to fire service and spending time with the many friends he made while being a volunteer fireman.
Bernard was also an avid NASCAR fan, life member of Carthage BPOE, VFW and an active member and officer in the Carthage American Legion. Being a WWII veteran, being able to participate in an Honor Flight to visit Washington D.C. Memorials with his son Christopher in April, 2014 was especially meaningful for him.
Special thanks to all the employees of the FASNY Firemen's Home, especially, Sophia Kamenovsky. It was always his wish to spend his last days with his family at the Home.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary, Watertown, 3 daughters, Michelle (Bruce) Ferguson, Carthage, Danielle Cocuzzoli, Huntersville, NC and Aimee ( Guillermo ) Quetell, Jamesville, NY, three sons, Peter (Brigitte), Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., Christopher (Dawn), Adams Center, and Jon (Giovanna), Bogis-Bossey, Switzerland. He was especially proud of his 15 grandchildren and 10 great grand children. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary (Jay) Gibson, Checotah, Oklahoma, Elenor Jacobs, Clearwater, Fla., Helen Thissen, Dubuque, Iowa and Emily Vogt, Carthage, and a brother William (Joan), Dexter and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a brother Donald, a sister Anna Woodward and son-in-law Tony Cocuzzoli.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, 10:00am at St. James Church in Carthage with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Copenhagen. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral home will be on Wednesday from 4-7pm.
