Bette A. Shampine, 77, of South Clinton St. Carthage, died tragically Monday, February 5, 2018 following a fire at her home.
Bette was born on August 18, 1940 in West Carthage, the daughter of the late Clyde W. and Leona P. (Perry) Shampine. She was a 1958 graduate of Augustinian Academy. She entered religious life with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Watertown in 1963 until 1969. Bette went on to graduate from Potsdam State in 1972 receiving her bachelor's degree in elementary education. She worked as an elementary teacher for 31 years for the Harrisville Central School District.
Bette was a devout member, lector and eucharistic minister of St. James Church. Her memberships included the Ave Maria Circle, New York State Retired Teachers Association, Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary, Red Hat Society, Village Ecumenical Ministries and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
She is survived by her two nephews, Scott Shampine of Clayton and Steve and Julie Shampine of Los Angeles, CA, her great nieces Jennifer and Lindsey Shampine, her two beloved cats, Mitzi Pooh and Calli Jean and many cousins. Her brother, David C. Shampine died in May of 2017.
Due to the renovations at St. James Church, the funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 10 at Augustinian Academy Gymnasium with Rev. Donald A. Robinson, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery in the spring.
