Betty J. Heath, 80, of Great Bend, died Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.

Betty was born May 20, 1937 at home in West Carthage, the daughter of the late John G. and Hazel (Belile) Fahsel. She was a 1955 graduate of Carthage Central and a 1959 graduate of Potsdam State University. Betty began her long teaching career in Lowville and Hyde Park, NY before her marriage. She married Fred S. Heath on December 27, 1966 at the Woolworth Memorial United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Fred died on February 27, 1992. Betty taught for more than 30 years for the Carthage Central School District, primarily as a 4th grade teacher.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, casinos and traveling, especially when her husband was alive.
Betty was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Assoc., National Home Garden Club, NYSUT
and former member of the Great Bend Fireman's Auxiliary.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband: LeAnn and Randy Garrow of Hammond; her grandson, Christopher Sharp of Great Bend, a niece, Mrs. Kim (Mark) Cowan of Pulaski; 2 nephews, Mr. Steven (Jessica) Fahsel of Brewer, ME and Mr. Jeffrey (Lisa) Fahsel of San Mateo, CA and several great nieces and nephews. A brother, Richard J. Fahsel, died on March 5, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 13 at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage with Rev. Tracy Cook and Rev. Warren Fargo officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage. There will be a calling hour preceding the funeral service from 12:00pm -1:00pm.
