Obituary

Betty G. McLean, 100, formerly of 439 N. Washington St., Carthage, died Monday, October 8, 2018 at the Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Carthage.

Betty was born on November 10, 1917 in Carthage, the daughter of the late Robert R. and Grace (Rivers) Marcott. She was a 1937 graduate of Carthage High School and the Watertown School of Commerce. She was married to Frederick G. McLean and the couple later divorced. She worked at Gilbert's Laundry and for the Village of Carthage Recreation Department. During WWII, she was the first female shift chemist at National Paper. She later was Personnel and Payroll Clerk and finally Receptionist for the Crown Zellerbach Corporation, retiring in 1981.

Betty was the first woman elected to the Town of Wilna Board which she served for 26 years. She was the Democratic Chairperson for Jefferson County for many years. Governor Mario Cuomo appointed her to the St. Lawrence/Black River Commission and she served for 8 years. She had tea with Lady Bird Johnson at the White House.

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage, American Legion Auxiliary Post # 789 of Carthage and former Jefferson County Auxiliary President, Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary, former Board member of the Community Action Planning Council and the Wilna Housing Authority.

She is survived by one daughter: Mrs. Jane E. Matthews of Saratoga Springs, two grandchildren; Susan Coggeshall of Chester, VT and Scott Matthews of Briar Cliff Manor, NY; 6 Great Grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her siblings, Helen Davis and Donald and Richard Marcott and 2 infant sisters, Ruth Mary and Doris Marcott.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Carthage with Jon Svereika, Pastor officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 3-6 pm at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.
