Obituary

Carthage – Dr. Claud J. Lawler, 77, of 35199 N. Lake Rd., died Sunday, January 4, 2015, in the Carthage Area Hospital Emergency Room after being stricken at his residence.

Claud was born in Watertown on September 7, 1937, he son of the late Claud J. and Marie Balles Lawler. He was a 1957 graduate of Augustinian Academy and the University of Buffalo in June of 1962, receiving his Dentistry license in August of 1962. He married the former Dianne H. Hebert on July 10, 1970 at St. James Church in Carthage.


Claud's dentistry practice started in 1962 in the Medical Arts Building in Watertown. He moved to State St. in Watertown in 1978 and operated for 10 years there while also building an office on Rt. # 126 in Champion in 1985. He maintained both practices for 2 years and finally practiced in Champion until 2006. He continued working at the Children's Clinic in Watertown for a few years after retiring. During his career he served on staff at Mercy Hospital, House of the Good Samaritan and Carthage Area Hospital where he also was a board member. He was instrumental in establishing dental care for low income families which led to the development of the Children's Clinic.

He was a fellow in the American Society of Geriatric Dentistry, Assoc. of Hospital Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, Council of National Board of Dental Examiners, life member of the NYS Dental Assoc., Past Exalted Ruler of the BPOE Lodge # 1762 of Carthage, Carlowden Country Club, Denmark, Naval Reserves, former President of the Carthage Lions Club, and served on the finance committee and pastoral council of St. Mary's Church in Copenhagen.

He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was an avid sportsman, fisherman and woodworker.


He is survived by his wife, Dianne H. of Carthage, two sons: Joseph C. and his wife Roxanne Lawler of Carthage and Christian M. Lawler of Rochester and his 3 Grandchildren, Spencer, Kennedy and Cooper Lawler.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church, Copenhagen with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Wednesday from 4-7pm.

DUE TO THE WEATHER, THE FUNERAL SERVICE WILL NOW BE HELD AT ST. JAMES CHURCH IN CARTHAGE AT 11:00am ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 8TH.
