Obituary
Colin Byron Sayer, 97, formerly of Carthage, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2013 at his home in New Port Richey, Florida.
Born August 10, 1915 in Black River, NY, he was the son of Edgar B. and Colice Caulfield Sayer. A graduate of Black River High School, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1933, serving in Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh, NY. On June 9, 1937, he married Ruth Ella Lennox in Black River. She
predeceased him after 63 years of marriage. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific aboard the USS Hyde LPA-173 as a landing craft coxswain during WWII. Following the war, he and his wife moved to Carthage, NY where he worked as a logger and mechanic. In 1978, he retired from his position as Supervisor of the Equipment Concentration Site at Fort Drum, NY and moved to Sanford, FL where he lived until his loving wife's death on August 4, 2000. On June 19, 2004, he married Vivian Godzicki of Oviedo, FL and moved to New Port Richey, FL. Colin was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church in New Port Richey.
Colin was a Charter/Life member and Past Post Commander of VFW Post 7227, Carthage, NY. He was also a 4th Degree and Past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council 5357, Sanford, FL. Colin loved the water and spent his summers fishing, water skiing, and boating on Lake Ontario and Lake Bonaparte in NY. In his retirement, he was active in the Golden Age Olympics and Over 50 Club in Sanford, FL and became an avid painter.
He is survived by his two sons, Gary "Buddy" (Gloria) Sayer of Auburn, NY and Patrick (Betsy) Sayer of Ovid, NY; grandchildren, Michael (Sherry) Eckleman, Colin (Anna) Eckleman, Johnna Eckleman (John) Larkin; Kimberly Sayer (Don) Hurst, Judy Sayer (Bill) Foresman, Sharon Sayer (Steve) Golding; Jon (Peggy) Sayer, Timothy Sayer, William Sayer and Samuel (Jill) Sayer; 16 great grandchildren; his sister Dorothy Sayer McKinley Foltz and his brother Edgar William (Jean) Sayer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Marie Eckleman and a sister, Julia Sayer Sherrod.
There will be no services held in Florida. Colin's ashes will be interred during a family graveside service in the spring at the Black River Cemetery in NY.
