Watertown - Darren Gates, 47, husband of Shella M. Gates of Watertown, entered into a peaceful rest Sunday evening at his residence in Watertown while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Darren was born in Carthage on February 2, 1966, the son of Maureen Gates. He was a graduate of Watertown High School. He married the former Shella Mae Schwalm on May 17, 1986 in Watertown. He served with the 588th Engineer Battalion from 1987 until 1993. He served during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. He was a weapons armament specialist and received numerous awards and citations. He became disabled during his service in the Army. He was a proud member of the Watertown Sportsmen Club Inc. where he served on the Board of Directors. He loved old cars and especially his Alfa Romero. He was a "Jack of all Trades" and would lend a hand to anyone in need.
He is survived by his wife, Shella M.; daughter Jennifer L. Gates (fiancée Scott DuPre) and grandson Ethan DuPre; daughter Ann Gates; mother Maureen Gates of Watertown; several aunts, uncles, cousins and his two rescue dogs, Shadow and Nikita.
Honoring his wishes, there will be a "Celebration of his Life" held at the Watertown Sportsmen Club on Sunday, February 17th from 11:00am- 2:00pm. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
