Carthage - Dorothy M. Powell, 94, formerly of Dalton Estates, died Sunday, October 20, 2013, in the Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where she has resided for one year.
Dorothy was born in Carthage on November 28, 1918, the daughter of the late Bert and Ellen Queary Picket. She attended Augustinian Academy in Carthage. She married Joseph P. Powell on September 4, 1938 at St. James Church in Carthage. Mr. Powell, former superintendant of pulp manufacturing for the St. Regis Paper Mill in Deferiet, died on May 10, 1997.
Dorothy was a homemaker and worked in several businesses, her last being the manager of the lingerie department at the former Howland's Dept. Store in Watertown. She loved spending time at the family cottage on the Stillwater Reservoir and was an avid New York Yankees fan.
She was a member of the Deferiet, Copenhagen and Brady Acres Senior Citizens, the Ave Maria Circle and the VIP's of St. James Church.
She leaves, five sons:, Joseph M. Powell of Carthage, Stephen L. Powell of Central Square, Lawrence M. Powell of Cazenovia, Michael P. Powell of Lancaster, PA and Thomas P. Powell of Fort Mill, SC, several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren. She is predeceased by her daughter, Sandra Ann Meshurle and her son, Richard J. Powell.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Tuesday from 4-7pm.
