Obituary

Edith "Edie" Ruth Martin (West Carthage, NY)
February 3, 1936 – July 15, 2025

With deepest love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of Edith Ruth Martin (Simmons), who went home to be with the Lord on July 15, 2025, at the age of 89. She passed peacefully at the Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown, NY, surrounded by those who loved her most.

Born February 3, 1936, Edith brought joy to the world from the very beginning. A lifelong resident of the North Country, she spent her working years serving smiles and kindness at Intorcia's Donut Shop and later with the Carthage Central School District.

She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Prievo and Dawn Paige, and their beloved husbands — her "sons" in her heart — Ernest Prievo and Jim Paige. Her cherished grandchildren include Scott Paige (wife Amanda), Joe Paige (wife Kari), Jennifer (Prievo) McGreevy (husband Jared), Dustin Prievo (wife Kaitlyn), and Melinda Prievo (fiancée Christina Godbout). She leaves behind a legacy of love through her great-grandchildren: Nicole, Jenna, Jacob, Bennett, Gavin, Ethan, Preslee, Knixon, Monroe, Wells, Waylon, and Woodson. She cherished a friendship with her sister-in-law Delores Parry, as well as close friends Wayne & Peggy Arnold and Elda Chisamore, as well as several other cherished family and friends along with her nieces and nephews.

Edith is reunited in Heaven with her husband Donald Martin, her parents Levi and Marion (LaLone) Simmons, sisters Edna Knapp and Ethel Allen, brothers Frank, Gordon, Stanley, and Robert Simmons, her three infant grandchildren Derrick, Annie, and Ammie, and her cherished friend Rita Kamide.

She was a previous member of Relay for Life, United Community Church, and a regular attendee of Lundy's Chapel. Her faith was the foundation of her life. She adored her church family and deeply admired her pastor, Wayne Arnold.

To know Edith was to know love, warmth, laughter — and fashion! A true icon in her own right, she never left the house unless every detail of her outfit was meticulously matched: shoes, earrings, purse, and her signature costume jewelry (of which she had enough to open a boutique). You could always count on her to show up "dressed to the nines," even if she was just going to the grocery store.

She had a heart of gold and could find something to love in everyone — no matter who they were or what they'd done. Her smile was unforgettable, her joy absolutely contagious, and her ability to put others first, unmatched. She lived to love and loved to give. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will remember her as their biggest fan, always present at every moment in their lives.

Her family will forever cherish her sayings and traditions:

"I love you, a bushel and a peck, you bet your pretty neck I do!"

"Your eyes are bigger than your belly."

"It's Ok"

Memories made each Christmas Eve at their home on High Street.
