Obituary

Edson Ivan Reed, 84, West Carthage, died peacefully at his home, July 7, 2015 under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and his family.

Mr. Reed, Born Oct 24, 1930 in Sterlingville, NY now part of Fort Drum, Son of the late Edson Edgar Reed and Olive Elizabeth Catlin. The Family moved to Redwood, NY where he attended Redwood High School, being a member of the basketball and cross country team, holding a meet record in Auburn NY, graduating in 1948. He moved to West Carthage in 1949 with his mother after his father's death in 1945. Ivan was a stock clerk for F.W. Woolworth Co. in Carthage and later went to work for Crown Zellerbach Company in Carthage retiring after 33 years as supervisor of the shipping department.

He married Grace Walsemann in 1953 daughter of Louis and Blanche Clarke Walsemann. They had four children: Mrs. Patrick (Michele, Mickey) Henry, Watertown; Victor (Kimberly) Reed Martinez, Ca; Edson (Ed) Reed Jr., West Carthage; Diane Reed – Hunt, Concord Mass. Five Grand Children: Alicia Henry, Watertown; Nicole and Jessica Reed, Martinez, Ca; and Graham and Audrey Hunt, Concord Massachusetts.

Ivan was involved in the Cub Scouts when his sons were young acting as there their Den Father. He also enjoyed cooking for his family and worked for several local dinners as a short order cook. He was an active member of the Carthage Elks working as a cook on dinners and clam bakes. He also was a member of the West Carthage Fire Department and proud member of the West Carthage Firematics Team. Ivan was an expert gardener spending many hours a day on his gardens at his house. His garden and waterfall were featured several times on the Hospital Garden Tour. He was an avid New York Yankee, NY Giant and NY Ranger fan.


The family would like to thank Hospice of Jefferson County and their staff for the care given to Mr. Reed.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, July 11th from 1-4 pm at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4:00pm. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Naumburg.
