Obituary

Carthage - Ernest A. Hagenston, 58, of 208 A N. School St., died Friday, June 22, 2012 in the emergency room of the Carthage Area Hospital after being stricken at his residence.

He was born in Detroit, MI, on April 29, 1954, the son of the late Morris and Constance Irene Dickerson Hagenston. He was a 1974 graduate of Washingtonville High School in NY. He attended Orange County Community College majoring in Architecture. He was a member of Carpenters Union 964 of Rockland County. Ernest married the former Doris A. Dawson on September 26, 1981 in Monroe, NY. Ernie and his family moved to Carthage in 1988. As Hagenston Construction, he was a self employed contractor and remodeled many area businesses and homes. Ernie was proficient in all areas of construction.


A member of the " Zipper Club" he underwent a quadruple bypass and was a two time cancer survivor of non Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1994 and squamous cell cancer in 2010. Through everything, he remained positive, happy and kept working.

A member of the Methodist Church of Carthage, Ernie enjoyed cooking breakfast after church and was the creator of the annual "Ernie's Famous Corned Beef Dinner". He loved Carthage and his favorites were having breakfast at Gail's Chatterbox, Church Street Diner and Stefano's, talking with the regulars.

He is survived by his wife Doris A. of Carthage, three daughters, Keri and her fiance' Jonathan Brown of East Greenbush and Michelle and Amy of Carthage and a granddaughter Mckenzie at home. Ernie's girls were a great source of pride. His brother-in-law, James Dawson of Greenwood Lake, NY. He was also "Uncle Ernie" to Tyler, Garrett and Meghan Dawson and Robin, Sharon and Jerry. He is predeceased by his parents, a step father, Gerald Ludwig, a brother, Morris Hagenston and a sister, Barbara Beauregard.


Ernie was much loved and will be greatly missed and leaves a legacy of love and laughter.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 4:00 PM at the Carthage First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 2-4 pm.
