Obituary

Carthage - George G. Ashcraft, 86, of 24390 Staie Rd., died Thursday, January 22, 2015, at his home where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

George was born on October 20, 1928, in Woodsmills (Fort Drum) the son of the late Eugene and Virginia (Blanche) Hubbard Ashcraft. He attended schools in Woodsmills, North Wilna, Carthage and Copenhagen. He married the former Dora C. Mono on January 8, 1948 in Carthage. Dora died on November 24, 2003.


George worked at the Carthage Machine Co. for over 40 years, retiring as a foreman of the welding shop. He leaves a legacy of taking care of his large family and his love of woodworking.

George and Dora were both lifetime honorary members of the Carthage Wrestling Club for all their years of support of Carthage Wrestling.

He is survived by his six daughters and their husbands: Keitha (Bill) Tanner of Carthage, Carol (Patrick) Messore of Hannibal, Dora (Bill) Malson of Mt. Clemons, MI, Linda (David) Mulrooney of Syracuse, Betsy Shinnick of Lowville and Roni Sue (Waleed) Koudi of El CaJon, CA, six sons and their wives: Bruce Ashcraft and his companion, Carol Moseley of Great Bend, Stanley (Maureen) Ashcraft of Goodyear, AZ, George (Diana) Ashcraft of Felts Mills, Dennis (Leslie) Ashcraft of Fulton, John (Sue) Ashcraft of Great Bend and Arthur (Grace) Ashcraft of Spring Hill, FL, 92 Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A daughter, Sandra died in infancy and two brothers, Jessie and Ronald Ashcraft and a sister, Jeanie Timmerman are predeceased.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 26th at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Natural Bridge. A calling hour will precede the funeral service at the church from 10:00am – 11:00am. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.

Memorial donations may be made to the Carthage Wrestling Club or to the Heritage Fund of St. James Church.
