Carthage - George H. Schermerhorn, 78, of 41068 Texas Road, died Sunday, April 27, 2014, at University Hospital, Syracuse after being stricken at his residence in the morning.

Geroge was born in Carthage on February 10, 1936, the son of the late George W. and Ella Bartell Schermerhorn. He attended school in Carthage.  He served in the National Guard Reserves from 1954 to 1962.  George married the former Sharon M. Gokey on October 24, 1970 in Carthage. He began his employment with NY Central Railroad in 1953. They later became Penn Central and then ConRail and he retired after 43 years of service in 1996 as a Trackman B Operator.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors but loved his grandkids more.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon M. of Carthage, one daughter and son-in-law: Georgie and Ronald O'Shaughnessy of Carthage, five grandchildren, Aarika, Brooke, Nick, Emily and Austin, five Great Grandchildren, seven brothers: Carl, John, Charles, Bruce and David, all of Carthage, Lester of Beaver Falls and Mark of Harrisville, and several nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by two daughters, Jane Schermerhorn and Marie Stenoski, two sisters, Gloria Fuller and Linda Gill and two brothers, Keith and Gail Schermerhorn.

Family and friends may call at the  Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3-6pm. Burial will be in St. Peter's and Paul's Cemetery, Fish Creek at the convenience of the family.
