Obituary

Grace J. Persons Brown, passed peacefully on December 31, 2023, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility in Lowville.

Grace was born May 2, 1928, to Joseph and Hannah Jones Persons of Copenhagen NY in the town of Denmark.  She graduated from Copenhagen Central School in 1946. Predeceasing her in death were her siblings, Joseph Persons, Richard Persons, Lucille Leader, Jerlene Ventiquattro, Morris Persons, and Gerald Persons. Surviving are a sister BettyJane Bernhard and in-laws, Donald and Pat Brown and Robert (Bob) Miller of Carthage, and several nieces and nephews.

Grace was united in marriage to David C. Brown of Carthage on June 15, 1948, and they resided at 2 Stone St. West Carthage where they raised two children: Len Rohr-Curran (Philip) Alfred, NY, and Su Brown (Michael) of Deer River NY. There are three grandchildren Sarah Rohr Payne (Brian) Freeville NY, Abby Brown Fett (Russel) North Pole, Alaska and Kari Brown Paige (Joseph) Black River, NY, and five great grandchildren: Katyln Payne, Gavin Paige, Ethan Paige, Raylan Fett, and Alivia Fett. Upon retirement they moved to West Side Terrace where they enjoyed friendships (especially with Betty Eldridge with whom she shared a birthday), activities, and events.

Grace was employed at the former St. Regis Paper Co in Herrings and West Carthage, she was an anti-aircraft observer during WWII, was employed by the Shine's Theater in Carthage, and worked at Waites Market (which many times said it was her favorite job).

She was a member of the Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary, Carthage bowling clubs, and the United Community Church. Grace enjoyed sewing, crafting, knitting, and reading and shared a small business with Sharon Gibbons making Christmas ornaments that were sold in gift shops in the Syracuse area. One of her greatest pleasures was being with family, especially at "Camp". Along the way there were always "Lawn Sales" and ice cream stores that would grab their attention.

Upon their request, there will not be a formal service. Committal will be in Swinburne Cemetery, Deer River, in the spring. Our family would like to thank everyone who shared in the lives of both David and Grace Brown, they loved the Village of Carthage and the many memories they made there.

Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage. To leave a condolence, go to www.bezanillafh.com.
