Helen E. Liola, 94, of 943 State St., died peacefully Thursday, November 30, 2017 at her daughter's home where she has resided since 2001.

Helen was born on August 21, 1923 in Carthage, the daughter of the late Antonio and Tomasina (DiLaura) Cocuzzoli. She was a 1940 graduate of Augustinian Academy.  She married John P. Liola on June 16, 1945 at St. James Church in Carthage with Rev. Egan officiating. John died on May 7, 2001.  Helen operated Tony's Restaurant in Carthage together with her family from 1933 until 1996. Her grandson continues in the family tradition today by operating Liola's Pizzeria in Carthage.

Helen was a lifelong Yankees fan and loved watching sports, especially Syracuse basketball and old movies.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband: Maryann and Malcolm Wetmore of Carthage, two grandchildren; Jacolyn Wetmore of Annapolis, MD and Jay Wetmore of Carthage, several nieces and nephews and her beloved pets, Godiva and Giada. She is predeceased by her brother, Dewey Cocuzzoli and a sister, Elvina Keller.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, December 5 at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Donald A. Robinson, Pastor officiating.  Entombment will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Visitation will be held privately by the family. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA of Watertown or to a charity of one's choice.
