Jeanette Brown Reid, 85, of Carthage, NY, formerly of Gulfport, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026, at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville, NY, with her loving niece, Danielle Carr, by her side.
Jeanette was born on June 23, 1941, in Scotland, the daughter of the late James and Margaret Reid. Jeanette began fencing on her college team, competed internationally, and eventually reached Olympic level status. Jeanette competed in numerous marathons and triathlons throughout her life and maintained an active, athletic lifestyle.
Jeanette earned a Bachelor of Science in 1962 from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Master of Arts from Montclair State College in 1991, and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of South Florida in 1998. She opened a private psychotherapy practice, Dr. J. B. Reid, in Gulfport, Florida, and counseled clients with HIV/AIDS and their families. She earned her private pilot’s license and owned her own Cessna airplane. Her love of flying was unmatched.
Having a strong sense of her Scottish heritage and homeland, Jeanette wrote a book, Women Warriors of WWII. The book tells accounts of Scottish women and their contributions to their country during WWII.
Jeanette is predeceased by her parents, James and Margaret Reid, her siblings, Margaret Brown Reid and Thomas Reid, her partner Betty Santelli, and her beloved dog, Skye, and cat, Wee Willie (among many other dogs and cats).
Jeanette is survived by extended family of nieces and nephews.
Per her wishes, she will be cremated and returned to her homeland of Scotland. Heartfelt gratitude goes out to the staff of the Lewis County Health Care Facility and Lewis County Hospice for their unwavering care and support of Jeanette. She was loved without reservation. Jeanette wanted to fly away in her own way, at her own time. No wake, viewing hours, or services will be held, as per her wishes.
Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, 518 State Street, Carthage, NY 13619. To leave a message of sympathy, please visit www.bezanillafh.com.
