Joann L. Zando, 74, of 11 Baron Ave. died Monday, January 30, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown following an automobile accident on Rt. 81.
Joann was born November 1, 1942 in Cornwall On Hudson, the daughter of the late Deforest L. and Marion (Johnson) Reed. She was a 1960 graduate of Carthage Central School and Central City Business Institute in Syracuse. Joann was secretary for Mr. Robert Murphy, Principal of West Carthage Elementary for many years. She married Gino M. Zando on August 7, 1965 at St. James Church in Carthage. Mr. Zando died on January 25, 2013. Joann was administrative assistant in the Regional Woodlands Department of the St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet, Gray's Flower Shop in Carthage and currently was the Development Manager for the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation.
Joann was a Trustee for the Village of Deferiet, a member of the Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary, Red Hats Society, a hostess for the Miss NYS Pageant and had attended many Miss America Pageants. She was very proud to have walked in the Heart Walk each year for the American Heart Association in her husband's memory.
She is survived by her two sons and their wives: Craig M.and Lynda Zando of Verona, NJ and Christopher L. and Jennifer Zando of Allendale, NJ, three grandchildren; Marco, Lucas and Ava Zando, two sisters: Donna Ross Craft of Carthage and Linda Stackel of Rutland, three brothers: Lance, David and Wayne Reed, all of Carthage and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister, Carron Getman and a brother, Francis Reed.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 4 at St. Rita's Church in Deferiet with Rev. Robert L. Decker, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, February 3 from 4-7pm at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
Memorials may be made to the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation, 3 Bridge St., Carthage, NY 13619, the Deferiet Vol. Fire Dept., or to the Jefferson County S.P.C.A.
