Carthage - John E. Hutchins, 72, of 4689 Old State Road, died Saturday, May 17, 2014, in the emergency room of the Carthage Area Hospital after being stricken at his business.

John was born in Lowville on July 21, 1941, the son of the late Arthur and Ada Vary Hutchins. He attended school in Carthage. He married the former Diana R. Cassoni on July 21, 1962 at St. James Church in Carthage. He was a 1968 graduate of the Vaughn Barber School in Hartford, CT. John has been a self-employed barber since, operating Gentlemen's Choice on S. James St. in Carthage since 1974.

John was a 4th degree member of the Bishop Conroy, General Assembly Knights of Columbus, Carthage Council #291, Knights of Columbus, BPOE Lodge # 1762 of Carthage and the Blue Rock Hunting Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Diana R. of Carthage, one daughter and her husband: Tonia and Reese Graham of Cody, WY, two sons: Daniel and his wife Amelia Hutchins of Lebanon, CT and Glenn Hutchins and his fiance' Maria Bailey of Parish, 4 Grandchildren, Samantha and her fiance' Craig Alexander, Jonathan, Angelo and Audrey, 1 step-grandson, Thomas, 1 great grandson, Vincenzo Nash Alexander, two brothers: Richard and Gary Hutchins, both of Carthage and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two brothers, Arthur Jr. and Bob and a sister-in-law, Phyllis.


Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Mono officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery at the family's convenience. Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Tuesday from 4-7pm. where members of the BPOE Lodge # 1762 will have a memorial service at 6:30pm.
