West Carthage - John F. Lorence, Jr., 86, of 826C Tamarack Drive, died Friday morning, September 13, 2013, in the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Carthage Area Hospital where he has resided since suffering a stroke earlier this month.
John was born in Rock Point, Maryland on November 5, 1926, the son of the late John F. and Anna Mae Gruner Lorence Sr.. He attended school in Maryland. A veteran, he served in the Navy during the end of World War II. Mr. Lorence married the former Inez M. Marshall on September 23, 1950 in Washington, DC.
The couple moved to Sanfordville, NY where they built a home and lived for 50 years. John was an auto mechanic for nearly 35 years, and retired from Gordon Theisen Pontiac dealership in Potsdam. The couple moved to West Carthage, 5 years ago.
John was a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge # 1762 of Carthage and former member of the Potsdam Elks for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Inez M. of West Carthage, two sons: Christopher A. (Theresa) Lorence of Carthage and John F. Lorence III of Liverpool, 3 Grandchildren: Christopher, Jennifer, and John, 3 Great Grandchildren: Ella, Dominick, and Leah, and a sister: Elizabeth Sterling of Albany, GA. A daughter-in-law Angela Lorence and a sister Margaret are predeceased.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, September 18th at 1:00 PM at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor of St. James Church, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12-1pm.
