CARTHAGE — Joseph Powell Jr., 85, died peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife, Brenda, and his family.

Joe was born on August 15, 1940, in Carthage to the late Joseph Powell Sr. and Dorothy (Narrows) Powell. He attended Deferiet Elementary School and Carthage High School before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1957. He honorably served aboard the USS William R. Rush (DDR714) until 1961. Upon returning home, he worked at the St. Regis Paper Mill in Deferiet for 30 years and later worked as a custodian for the Carthage School District and for Fort Drum Janitorial Services.

On January 12, 1963, he married Brenda H. Marshall at St. Mary’s Church in Clayton. Together they had five children: Jo-Dee Altmire (Rod Hall), Julie (Danny) Cobb, the late Joseph M. Powell III (Annette), Jackie (Mark) Dobransky, and Josephine (Jeremy) Yawger, all of Carthage. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and four brothers: Steve (Phyllis) Powell of West Monroe; Larry (Sue) Powell of Cazenovia; Michel Powell of Florida; and Tom (Gina) Powell of South Carolina.

In addition to his son, Joseph M. Powell III, he was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Sandra; a brother, Dick; and a granddaughter, April.

Joe was known for playing his harmonica, which he always carried on him and he enjoyed four-wheeling with friends, fishing, NASCAR, and football. He took great pride in attending his grandchildren’s racing and sporting events, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation in his memory can be made to the Carthage Area Hospital.

Arrangements are under the care of the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home. Online condolences may be shared at www.bezanillafh.com.
