Carthage - Joyce E. Lackey, 61, of 113 N. School St., passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, at her home in the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Joyce was born in Carthage on May 8, 1953, the daughter of the late Henry and Anna Dealing Harper. She graduated from Carthage Central High School and Jefferson Vocational Education Center in 1971 with a Regents diploma and a certificate in bookkeeping. In addition, she furthered her education with a variety of coursework at Jefferson Community College. Joyce loved numbers and was employed most of her working life doing payroll for a variety of employers, starting with Mercy Hospital after high school graduation and retiring from the payroll department with the Carthage Central School District in 2011. She loved children and was self-employed for a number of years as a daycare provider.
Joyce married John P. Lackey on February 14, 1981 at St. James Church in Carthage.
She was a loving and caring wife and mother. Joyce had many interests and especially enjoyed family adventures including hiking, cross country skiing, camping and kayaking. Many happy summer days were spent at the family camp at Chazy Lake, NY. Joyce had a hardy and well known laugh and ever present smile which will be sorely missed by friends and family.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons: Shawn and Andrew Lackey, both of Black River and Ryan Lackey of Geneva, NY, a sister and brother in law: Mary and Jack Sweeney of Croghan, a brother and sister in law: James and Judy Harper of Carthage and a nephew, nieces and cousins. She is predeceased by, her parents and two brothers, Henry Jr. and Richard Harper. Also surviving is her constant companion, Emily, her cat.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. James Church with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor officiating. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.
