Obituary

Carthage - Margaret A. "Maggie" Brotherton, 75, of 34731 St. Rt. 26, died Saturday morning, July 23, 2016 at her residence where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Maggie was born in Great Bend on August 16, 1940, the daughter of the late Peter and Irene Toth Ginger Sr. She graduated from Augustinian Academy in 1957 and later attended the Watertown School of Commerce. She married Thomas L. Brotherton on September 5, 1959 at St. Rita's Church in Deferiet. Before the birth of her children, she worked at the St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet from 1957-1961. She returned for a short period before starting her career for the Carthage Central School District in 1968. Her first position was secretary to the cafeteria manager before becoming secretary to the high school vice principal and finally, retired as the secretary to the middle school principal in 1997. She continued to substitute at the school until 2015.

Maggie was a member of the Red Hats Society, Great Bend Fire Dept. Auxiliary and Past Secretary to the Women's Bowling League. She was an avid bowler and NASCAR fan and loved traveling to casinos, gambling and playing tickets.


She is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Brotherton of Carthage, one daughter and her husband: Deborah and Brian Hayden of Carthage, one son: Thomas M. Brotherton of Carthage, 5 Grandchildren, Sarah, Melissa, Michael, Matthew and Chelsea, 5 Great Grandchildren, Cali, Aubrianna, Jameison, Harper and Blake, two brothers: Peter Ginger Jr. and James Ginger, both of Carthage and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A great grandson, Kolton Brotherton is predeceased.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 11:00am at St. Rita's Church in Deferiet with Rev. Christopher Lobby officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Monday from 4-7pm.
