Obituary

West Carthage - Marie Ann Astafan, 91, formerly of 5 Franklin St., passed away on Friday, March 6, 2015 at the home of her daughter Gina, in Watertown where she has resided for 8 years.

Marie was born in Carthage on June 1, 1923, the daughter of the late Peter Thomas and Nazera Salamy Kamide. She was a 1941 graduate of Augustinian Academy. She married Abraham S. Astafan on June 29, 1947 at St. James Church in Carthage. Mr. Astafan died on January 21, 2010. Marie, together with her husband, operated Astafan's Grocery in West Carthage and the Oasis Campsite on Route 3 near Natural Bridge for many years.


She is survived by her two daughters: Mrs. Sonny (JoAnn) Ashlaw of Carthage and Gina M. Astafan of Watertown, one son and his wife: John (Pamela) Astafan of Watertown, 5 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren, one sister: Mrs. Jack (Virginia) Hayden of Central Square and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by 4 brothers, Naja, Louis, Faye and Siede Kamide and 2 sisters, Madeline Kamide and Bernadette Waterman.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor officiating. Spring burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Monday from 4-7pm.
