Obituary

Mary R. Sykes, 72, of 43 N. Broad St., West Carthage, passed away while under the care of her family and Hospice of Lewis County at the home of her niece on the Toth Road, Carthage on Thursday evening, June 6, 2024.

Mary was born on May 22,1952 in Carthage, the daughter of the late Edmond and Frances (Bodfield) Petrie. She was educated in Sackets Harbor. Mary was previously married to Raymond A. Sykes, and they later divorced. Mary was an excellent cook, working in many establishments in the North Country. Most notably the Unicorn Restaurant, Gary's Pub and the Riverside in Deer River for many years. She also was a tremendous baker and decorated and sold many cakes for weddings and special events.

Mary was a member of the Carthage Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son: Scott M. Sykes of West Carthage, a grandson, Adain and a granddaughter, Alexis, both of Watertown, two sisters: Melinda Carvin of Maryland and Melissa Fraiser of Sackets Harbor and a sister-in-law, Lois Petrie of Carthage. She is predeceased by her son, Shawn Sykes, her stepmother, Edna Petrie, a brother, Edmond (Butch) Petrie and two sisters, Margaret (Midge) Cleland and Monica Mothersell.

There will be a Celebration of Life at a date and place to be announced. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Sackets Harbor. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home. To leave a condolence, go to www.bezanillafh.com.
