Obituary

Natural Bridge - Nicholas Daniel Marrocco, 84, of 43800 Main St. passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse.

Nicholas was born in Massena on May 18, 1928, the son of the late Peter and Mary Filippello Marrocco. After attending Newark High School he served in the US Navy for four years aboard the USS Coral Sea. He then joined the Army for three years where he was stationed in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and Camp Drum, NY. He married the former Joann O. Blanchard on May 5, 1952 at St. Henry's Church, Natural Bridge with the Rev. Henry McFadden officiating. After his honorable discharge in 1953, he was employed by D.L. Reed Trucking and Buckley Motor Express both in West Carthage. He later drove for Smith Transport and various other trucking companies. He retired after thirty eight years of long distance driving. He then drove for Champion Sand & Gravel and retired at the age of 75.


He is survived by his wife, Joann of Natural Bridge, a daughter and son in law: Shelley and Daniel Crawford of Black River, a son and daughter in law: Peter and Amy Marrocco of Carthage. He is adored by his five grandchildren, Andrew and Ryan Crawford of Buffalo, Mary Jo Crawford of Black River, Toni Ann Helwig of Greece and Nicole Marrocco of Corinth and blessed with a great granddaughter Kaelyn Crawford, two sisters and a brother in law: Helen and Mack Campbell of Black River and Dorothy LaConti of Sparta, NJ and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Theresa Lagana and Polly Sarosky died before him.
Nicholas enjoyed Big Band music, snowmobiling and watching NASCAR. However what brought him great joy was spending time with his family and friends. He had a natural gift for making people laugh.


Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church, Carthage. Burial with military honors will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Natural Bridge. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Friday from 4-7pm.
