Carthage - Norbert J. Schneider, 79, of 222 State St., formerly of 573 S. Washington St., died Sunday, April 29, 2012, in the Carthage Area Hospital.
Mr. Schneider was born in Kirschnerville on July 8, 1932, the son of the late Reuben and Estella Fetterly Schneider. He attended Father Leo Memorial in Croghan and operated the family farm following his father's sudden death. He joined the Army in 1952 and served two years during the Korean War. He married the former Carol E. Shettleton on May 1, 1955 in Carthage. Mrs. Schneider, a former cook at the Carthage Elks Lodge, died April 29, 2008. Norbert worked for several automotive garages as a mechanic in the north county. He then worked on Fort Drum for ECS in heavy equipment repair, retiring several years ago. He retired from the Army Reserves and for many years, was the caretaker at Fairview Cemetery, Carthage.
He was a member of the American Legion Post # 789 of Carthage and a life member of the BPOE Lodge # 1762, Carthage where he was a past "Elk of the Year".
He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Colleen A. and Kelly Plumadore of Carthage, a son and his wife: John N. and Carolyn Schneider of Castorland, 4 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. Two brothers, Robert and Francis Schneider died previous.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Tuesday from 4-7pm.
