Obituary

Patrick W. Britton, 70, of Route 3, Carthage, died early Thursday morning, October 10, 2024 at his home while under the care of his loving family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Patrick was born on May 26,1954 in West Carthage, the son of the late Gordon and Rose (Brennon) Britton. He was a proud 1972 graduate of Augustinian Academy in Carthage where he excelled in football and basketball. He was united in marriage to Joanne R. Bloomingdale on November 6,1976 at Holy Family Church in Watertown. Patrick worked for Climax Manufacturing for 15 years before joining Verizon where he was a specialist technician, retiring in 2010. The couple have enjoyed their winter months in the New Smyrna area of Florida for many years.

Patrick played for the Watertown Red & Black from 1973 until 1978 when he was seriously injured playing and was later inducted to its Hall of Fame. In 2022, he was inducted to the American Football Assoc. Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He was currently serving as a Town of Wilna councilman and was previously on its Planning Board. Patrick was a communicant of St. James Church and a member of the choir for many years. Patrick was an exempt member of the Carthage Volunteer Fire Department where he volunteered for many years, Life member of the BPOE Lodge # 1762 in Carthage, former member of Carlowden Country Club and was a former Pee-Wee Baseball Coach. Pat and his brother Mike played music all over the North Country as the "Britton Brothers". He loved hunting white tail deer and spending time at their beautiful summer cottage at Soft Maple Flow.

He is survived by his wife: Joanne R. Britton of Carthage, two sons and their wives: Patrick and Suzanne Britton of Pennellville and Jeffrey and Nadine Britton of Sackets Harbor, his four grandchildren which he adored, Gracie, Drew, Peyton and Paige. two sisters: Maureen Ashcraft of Parrish, FL and Kathleen Homan of Edgewater, FL, one brother: Michael Britton of Parishville, NY and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles, and the Buckingham family who all but adopted Pat and his lifelong, do everything together brother, Bucky.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, October 14 at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Donald A. Robinson officiating.  Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Calling hours will be on Sunday, October 13 from 1-4pm at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home and Monday, October 14 from 9-10am, before the mass at St. James Catholic Church in Carthage.
