Peter Abbass passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 30, 2016.
Peter A. Abbass, born July 20, 1934 to Amin and Agnes (Gastin) Abbass in Watertown, NY. He graduated from Carthage Augustinian Academy in 1952 and St. Bonaventure University, Olean, NY in 1956. He served two years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Hawkins DDR 873. In 1959, he returned to Carthage and with his father and brothers, formed Abbass & Co. Food Distributors, at 126 Canal St, Carthage. Later, in 1966, the business relocated to Evan Mills and was reorganized under the name, Abbass Food Corporation. In 1997, he became employed by Jefferson County Department of Social Services, in the Chronic Care unit, retiring in 2014. In the last two years, he was employed by Samaritan Health, working part time as a Medicaid Eligibility liaison.
Peter married Mary Burke at St. Patrick's Church on August 21, 1965 in Chateaugay, NY. He is survived by his wife Mary and four children: Peter (Bettilyn) Abbass, Ithaca, NY, Michael Abbass, Denver, Colorado, Beth Ann (Peter) Levos, Burlington, VT, and Patricia Abbass, Austin, Texas. His two grandchildren are Caitlin Abbass, Elmira, NY and Gregory Abbass, Oswego, NY. His two brothers, Albert (Donna) Abbass of Watertown and Joseph Abbass of Carthage. He is survived by several nieces.
Peter is predeceased by his parents Amin and Agnes Abbass and a sister in law, Suzanne Abbass.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge # 1762 and the Knights of Columbus Council #291, both of Carthage.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 2nd from 4-7 pm at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 3rd at 11 AM at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald A. Robinson, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery.
