Mr. Peter N. Betrus, 99, died Sunday, September 7th, at Winter Haven Florida Hospital.

Peter was born in Carthage, NY on June 11, 1915, the son of the late Nemor and Bertha Betrus. He graduated from Carthage Augustinian Academy in 1932 and was also a graduate of Cortland College.

Peter was an avid athlete and sports enthusiast. He coached basketball for many years and in later years taught classes to aspiring coaches. He was a school superintendent of Harrisville Central School and spent 55 years in education in New York State. He was the past president of the N.Y.S. Retired Teachers Association. Peter remained active in many sports throughout his lifetime. He was an avid golfer and hunter as well as a past president of the N.Y.S. Public High School Athletic Association. In addition, he served as a member of the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Betrus was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Betrus in 1990 and a son Peter K. Betrus. Peter is survived by his wife, Winifred Betrus of Winter Haven, FL; one daughter, Patricia Berroyer of Kinderhook, NY, and five sons: Thomas Betrus (wife Toni), Seneca Falls, Robert Betrus (wife Jane), Spencerport, Jonathan Betrus (wife Sue), Hilton, William Betrus (wife Barbara), Naples, and Alan Betrus (wife Christine), Gouverneur, 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren and a sister, Betty Czoper of Carthage.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 22nd at 11 am at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in the St. James Cemetery immediately following the funeral mass. Calling hours at the Bezanilla- McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage will be on Sunday, September 21st from 2 to 6 pm.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department, Harrisville Food Pantry or St. James Catholic Church.
