Obituary

Roy Douglas Babcock, 73, of Deferiet, passed away on Sunday, May 5 2024 at University Hospital, SUNY Upstate Health and Science Center in Syracuse.

Doug was born May 20,1950 in Carthage, the son of the late Roy F. and Beverly (Branagan) Babcock. He attended Augustinian Academy and Carthage Central Schools.  He served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam war from August of1969 to December of 1970. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and one bronze star with valor. He was united in marriage to the former Pamela S. Kent on October 5,1996 at Carthage United Methodist Church.  Doug worked at the former P&C Foods in West Carthage and Pleasant Creek Meadows, Evans Mills before being permanently disabled many years ago.

He was a member of the Carthage United Methodist Church, American Legion Post # 789, Carthage, VFW Post # 7227, Carthage, former Chief of the Deferiet Fire Department, former Champion Fire Department member and was Scout Master for Boys Scouts Pack 39 and Troop 54.

He is survived by his wife: Pamela Babcock of Deferiet, three daughters: Jacey Bigness of Carthage, Erica Zagelow of Edgewater, MD and Kimberly (Justin) Shampine of Deferiet, one son: Troy (Sara) Babcock of Carthage, 14 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren, his siblings, Debbie Zackoski, Cindy Reed, Kathy LaBarge, Diane Wormwood, Lynn Schermerhorn, Lori Bierman, Kevin Wormwood and Joe Wormwood and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Roy Babcock and Beverly Wormwood and a sister, Cheryl Tavernier.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 pm on Friday, May 10 at the Carthage United Methodist Church with Rev Anne Canfield officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Great Bend. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 9 from 4-7pm at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, 518 State Street, Carthage, NY. Memorial services will be conducted by the American Legion at 6:00pm followed by the VFW at 6:30pm on Thursday evening.
