Carthage - Sharon W. Martle, 76, of 10894 State Rt. # 26, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the Ellis Farm at Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown where she resided for one day.
Sharon was born in Rochester, NY on December 16, 1939, the eldest daughter of the late Royson and Martha Stevens Whipple, she moved to Morrisville, NY at 5 years of age. She graduated from Morrisville-Eaton Central School in 1957 and Buffalo State Teachers College in 1961. In 1965 she received her Master's Degree from Buffalo State.
She married William J. Martle on June 24, 1961 in Morrisville, NY. They lived in Carthage until the time of her death.
Mrs. Martle taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades at Carthage Elementary School. She also taught one year in Deferiet and retired in June, 1995 after 34 years of teaching.
She was a member of the Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary, Eustayantha Study Club, a pinochle club and was a member of the Carthage Nazarene Church.
Sharon was an avid reader throughout her life and enjoyed computer, knitting and embroidery projects.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bill of Carthage; one son, William R. Martle and his companion Heather L. Wood of Deer River; her daughter Enid Hagerty, son-in-law Brian Hagerty, and two granddaughters, Erin and Margot Hagerty of Traverse City, MI. Also surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Enid and Jack Callander of Denver, CO, a sister-in-law in Rochester, NY, a nephew, 3 nieces and 2 great nieces.
Sharon's wishes were that there would be no calling hours or funeral. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Swinburne Cemetery, Deer River. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
