Sharon M. (Gokey) Schermerhorn

Lowville- Sharon M. Schermerhorn, 79, formerly of Texas Road in Carthage, died peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at the Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.

Born in Utica, NY on December 28, 1945, Sharon was the daughter of the late Telesphore C. and Ruth (Ruff) Gokey. She graduated from Carthage Augustinian Academy in1965. She married George H. Schermerhorn on October 24, 1970, in Carthage. While primarily a homemaker raising her children, she could often be found proudly working alongside her daughter at Alterations by Georgie. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, car rides with her companion, Harry, and she enjoyed reading, gardening, and loved her flowers. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Georgie and Ronnie O'Shaughnessy of Carthage; five grandchildren: Aarika (her best friend/granddaughter) and her husband, Erin Borisevic, SC; Brooke (Shannon) Shaffer, TX; Emily (Matt) Miller, AL; and Austin & Caela O'Shaughnessy, Little Falls, NY; eight great-grandchildren and one on the way, a sister, Nancy (Doug) Traylor, of Carthage; a brother, Don (Tina) Gokey, Carthage; along with her companion, Harry, of Lowville, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, George, her two daughters, Jane Schermerhorn and Marie Stenoski, brothers, Frank E. Gokey, Eugene Gokey, a grandson, Nicholas William Stenoski, and a nephew, David Traylor.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Peter's and Paul's Cemetery, Fish Creek.

In keeping with Sharon's generous spirit, her final selfless act, she gave the gift of life through organ, and tissue donation.
