William “Bill” Stuart Barney, age 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Carthage Area Hospital.
Calling hours will be held at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., located at 500 State Street, on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM A funeral service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00PM in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be held privately by his family.
Born on April 27, 1947, in Potsdam, NY, to the late Stuart and Marie (Todd) Barney, Bill attended Ogdensburg Free Academy. He proudly served four years of active duty in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Following his active service, he dedicated 26 years to the United States Army Reserves. Throughout his career Bill was employed at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Ogdensburg, worked for Ogdensburg BOCES, spent 8 years as a caretaker at Singer Castle. He also served as the sexton for the First Presbyterian Church in Watertown, retiring in 2010.
Bill enjoyed golfing, taking scenic drives through the Adirondacks, and sightseeing. He was also an avid New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Jessica (Jason) Levac of Rodman and Ben (Keely) Barney of Dexter; his loving companion of 24 years, Mary Marino of Watertown; his siblings, Mike (Marcy) Barney, Canton; Pamela Marie Coleman of Canton; Cindy Watson, Ogdensburg; David (Susan) Barney, Hermon; Susan (Barry) Webb, Sodus; Barbara Barney, Ogdensburg; Paula (Randy) Dillon, Tupper Lake; his grandchildren, Brendon, Bryce, Braelyn, and Alise; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his two brothers, Robert Barney (1962) and Jerry Barney (2015); and his four sisters, Jane Barney (1950), Mary McGaw (2015), Roberta Driscoll (2018), and JoAnn B. Lockwood (2020); as well as his brother-in-law, George F. Coleman (2020).
